Biographical Profile

Ed Bernstein

Bernstein was Professor of Art and Head of Printmaking (2011-13) and previously, Co-Head of Printmaking at Indiana University, Bloomington from 1991 till his retirement in August 2013. He is the founder and was Director of the “Indiana University Summer Program in Printmaking and Artists Books at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica, Venice, Italy” from 2000-2013 and 2016. He received his MFA with distinction in printmaking from Indiana in 1973. He studied with S.W. Hayter at Atelier 17 in Paris, holds a B.F.A, painting from the Rhode Island School of Design, and a B. A. Honors political science from Miami University, Ohio. Bernstein has two regional NEA’s and the Society of American Graphic Arts Award for Excellence.

Bernstein has taught and been visiting artist at, University of Wisconsin, Boston University, University of Louisville, Universidade Federal di Minais Gerais, Belo Horizonte, (Brazil), Willem DeKooning Academy (Rotterdam), Oxford University (UK), UC Berkeley, SUNY Buffalo, University of Washington (Seattle), Southern Illinois University (Carbondale), Pyramid Atlantic (Maryland), University of Manitoba -Canada, Rhode Island School of Design Program in Rome, University of the West of England,) L’Accademia delle Belle Arti di Venezia, among others.

He continues to be a presenter and curator at the annual Southern Graphics International Association, Mid-American Print Council, and IMPACT conferences.
